Cycling Ireland has named two strong junior and U23 national teams to fight it out for stage and overall honours in the big Easter Weekend fixtures now just around the corner.

The teams are a mix of experienced riders who have worn the green of Ireland and won major races before along with some names who have emerged more recently and are new to the Irish set up.

As expected, Sean McKenna of Aquablue has been selected on the U23 team of Kerry Group Rás Mumhan; a race he rode with the squad 12 months ago when he enjoyed a period in the yellow jersey before crashing.

Also in the squad are three young riders currently basing themselves in France in the shape of Sean Grimes, Matthew Teggart and Daniel Stewart.

Completing the line-up are Sean Hahessy of Fitscience and Conor Hennerby of Carrick Wheelers, both of whom are rewarded for very strong showings on home roads in recent weeks.

Michael O’Loughlin of NRPT-Magnet.ie is the form junior in the national team for the Gorey Three Day, with three wins under his belt already this season.

He is joined by his club mates Jake Gray and Adam Stenson, both of whom have ridden well of late; Stenson already tasting victory this year.

Cathal Clarke of Newry Wheelers, who won in Summerhill on St Patrick’s Day, is also named as are Declan Mulholland, a winner at the Boyne GP last week, and the very much in-form Simon Tuomey of Cork Giant.
