Irish elite and junior riders reach World No 1 in UCI rankings

Irish cyclists Mark Downey, Xeno Young top UCI world rankings

Irish riders are in the top 10 in the world in seven events; with two elite and junior Irish cyclists now the top ranked riders in the world in their events according to the UCI rankings. Above, Xeno Young is top of the junior pursuit and 2nd in the omnium.

Irish cyclists Mark Downey and Xeno Young are currently top of the UCI track cycling world rankings.

Downey, who has combined track and road over the past year, is currently top of the points race rankings.

And teenager Young, who won silver in both the European and world championships, is the top ranked junior pursuit rider in the world.

Mark Downey leads the way for Ireland with 2,310 in his rankings. Next is Niklas Larsen of Denmark on 2,230, followed by Pole Wojciech Pszczolarski with 1,880 points.

Lydia Boylan and Lydia Gurley are also in the top 10 in the world at their events on the track.

Irish junior cyclist Xeno Young has collected 1,440 points to go top of the pursuit rankings.

Lydia Gurley and Lydia Boylan are both ranked in the top 10 in their individual events.


He leads the way from Ivan Smirnov of Russia on 1,300 points with Valère Thiebaud of Switzerland in 3rd place on 1,250.

Downey collected a total of 1,000 points for his World Cup wins in the points race last November and in February of this year. Both wins were worth 500 points each.

He gained another 450 points for 10th in the points race at the World Championships back in April.

And in July of this year he was also 3rd in the U23 European Championships, picking up 160 points. He also gained points for a string of other placings in ranking events.

Young gathered all of his 1,440 points at the Europeans and worlds.

He was 2nd in both; collecting 540 points at the Euros in July and 900 points at the worlds the following month.

Felix English is 18th in the omnium world rankings. He is also 9th the in scratch race standings, with Marc Potts 15th.

And the pairing of Downey and English are 11th in the madison rankings.

Of the Irish women, Robyn Stewart is 31st in the keirin rankings. Lydia Boylan is 6th in the omnium rankings while Lydia Gurley is 18th in the points race.

And Gurley is 8th in the world rankings in the scratch race. Combined, Gurley and Boylan are 13th in the madison rankings.

In the junior category, Xeno Young is also 2nd in the world in the omnium. JB Murphy is 8th in the junior points race rankings.
