Shock at sudden passing of Irish cycling legend Gay Howard

Posted on: February 9th, 2018

In the long and storied history of Irish cycling, very few people have given as much to the sport as Gabriel Howard. His sudden passing has stunned the Irish road racing community.

A legend of Irish cycling, it is with deep sadness that we report the sad passing of Gabriel Howard.

Known to everyone in the sport as Gaybo, he had been a huge presence on the scene for years.

He started out as a successful cyclist. And once he had hung up his racing wheels his real contribution to the sport was only starting.

Gaybo – and wife Kay – were the driving force behind Stamullen Road Club in Co Meath for decades.

But his contribution didn’t stop there; he organised races for many years and did MC on other events all over the country.

When he took up the microphone on stage, he created a unique atmosphere with his sunny disposition, his uncanny ability to relate to everyone and his deep knowledge of the sport and its riders.

His passing has come as a bolt from the blue and was confirmed on the Rás Tailteann site this evening; a race he played a big part in in various guises down the years.

At stickybottle we were lucky enough to know Gaybo.

We were on the receiving end of his slagging and encouragement. And we also benefited from his help; mostly done behind the scenes and with no fuss.

We will have more on Gaybo later but for now we send our heartfelt sympathies to Kay, Seamus and the rest of the Howard family.
