Irish Corner 10 back at Alpe d'Huez in Tour 2018

Nicolas Roche gives his fellow Paddies a wave as he passes through Irish Corner 10 two years ago. The lads behind it want to turn Alpe d’Huez green at next year’s Tour.

Alpe d’Huez is back in the Tour de France next year and that means Irish Corner 10 also makes a return.

Based on Dutch Corner, where fans from Holland congregate at the same bend on the famed climb, Irish corner has had two editions to date.

The lads behind it – Ronan Fox and Stephen O’Shea – were there first in 2013 and again two years late.

And of course hundreds of fans from Ireland joined them. We’ve been speaking to them since the Tour 2018 route result was revealed and they’ve told us Irish Corner 10 is definitely going ahead again next year.

And Fox said the route this year looked really convenient for Irish fans looking to take in some of the racing.

“The early stages in the Vendee and Brittany areas are a short ferry ride away and the cobbles of Roubaix are within easy reach of several airports served from Dublin,” he said.

“But the most exciting news for us was that the Tour will once again climb the legendary Alpe d’Huez.

“In 2013 hundreds of Irish fans answered the call to come to the mountain to support our riders and Irish Corner 10 was born.

“Again in 2015 the corner was turned green – with a fair bit of white and orange.

“Everyone who was there said they had some of the best craic they’d ever had at a bike race.

“And we even made the Orica GreenEdge music video, leaving their Kiwi DS, Julian Dean, literally speechless.

“The riders have all told us that it gives them all a huge boost to know that we’ll be there to greet them and cheer them on. So hopefully, 2018 will be even better.

“Once again we’re putting out the call to Irish fans to come to Irish Corner 10 on Alpe d’Huez on Thursday 19th July.

“Bring your flags, your banners, your paint, your costumes, your beer coolers, your musical instruments and all of your friends.

“We can turn the mountain green again and show the Dutch up on Corner 7 how it’s done.

“You’d never know, we might even be cheering Dan on to yellow and helping Sam to defend the green.”
