Geraint Thomas crashes out of Tour de France

Team Sky and Chris Froome have been dealt a big blow with news that Geraint Thomas has crashed out of the Tour de France.

The Welshman crashed on the damp descent of the Col de la Biche with around 100km remaining on today’s stage 9.

He initially looked like he may be able to get back on his bike and stay on the race.

However, that was not the case and he was taken from the roadside to hospital by ambulance.

Early indications suggested Geraint Thomas is out of the Tour de France with a broken collar bone.

He had been 2nd overall behind team mate Chris Froome. Thomas had won the opening TT and held the yellow jersey for much of the first week.

However, his key role was to assist and protect team leader Froome. And with the strength and experience of Thomas now lost, his departure is a huge blow for the team.

Rafal Majka (Bora-hansgrohe) came down in the same crash and was struggling to stay in the race at the time of writing.

More to follow.
