Garda John McCallion had been out cycling but was found fatally injured on the road close to his Swinford home last evening.

A member of the Garda has been found dead on a Co Mayo road after earlier going out training on his bike.

John McCallion was discovered on the road fatally injured close to his home on Friday evening, with his bike beside him.

The cause of his death is not clear, though a post mortem should establish the reason.

That examination should determine if he died due to natural causes, a fall or a road collision.

Tragically for his family; his brother, who was also a garda, was killed on duty 10 years ago in Co Donegal.

Robbie McCallion was struck by a speeding car driven by a man who was trying to flee from gardai at the time.

Both brothers had followed the family tradition of taking up a career in policing.

John McCallion was a keen cyclist and worked in Co Mayo where he was from.

The 48-year-old married father of three children still lived in Swinford where he grew up.

His death last evening occurred on a stretch of road close to his home, though more precise details were not available at the time of writing.

“This is a tragedy beyond words,” said local businessman Joe Mellett, a former member of Mayo County Council.

“My deepest sympathy is extended to John’s wife, Collette, and three children, his parents, Bob and Nancy, and his sisters, Noirin and Deirdre.”
