Former national criterium champion Peter Hawkins has secured a place for next year with the British continental outfit Team Sigma Sport Specialized.

The 25-year-old Belfast man moves to the UK team following three years racing in Belgium.

Known for his turn of speed both in criteriums and short time trials, Hawkins was a member of the Team Ireland Skoda line-up for this year’s An Post Ras.

He won the prologue time trial in the Tour of the North in April and also finished 2nd in the Des Hanlon in Carlow. He has a national and Ulster criterium title in his palmares from 2009 and 2010 respectively.

His development had been held back for 12 months by glandular fever, before getting back to serious racing in the middle of last year.

His transfer to the UK outfit was announced today by the team. His most recent outing with the Ireland team was the Olympic dry-run event in London in August, where he finished 97th.

He will be based in England with the team next year and will ride the Premier Calendar races along with races like the Tour of Britain and most likely the An Post Ras.
