Darnell Moore Waller Cup

Darnell Moore takes another one; at the Waller Cup in Bohermeen. His form is getting stronger after some training adjustments. And now the Tour of Ulster and Rás loom large.

Having already been victorious this season at the Tour of Ards, Darnell Moore has done it again; this time at the Waller Cup.

He won in Co Meath from Philip Lavery (Strata 3-VeloRevolution) and Charlie Prendergast (Castlebar CC).

Both Lavery and Prendergast won races last weekend; the Coombes-Connor and Castlebar GP.

And seeing them off yesterday was more proof, if it were needed, that Moore’s form is better than ever this season.

Yesterday in Bohermeen the A1s had eight laps of a 16.5km course to contend with in the Bohermeen CC-promoted main event.

And though that left plenty of time for the form men to do damage, a key selection was made on the opening lap.

A large escape group went clear. And once they were away it proved a wearing down process lap after lap.

Cian Delaney (Stamullen) and Mark Reilly (Lucan RC) spent a lone period off the front; over two laps in total.

They took flight after three laps and just as the cooperation up front began to wane. Working together they pulled out a gap of about 45 seconds.

And while they were never caught by the group they had attacked; they were joined by the eventual podium men.

The catch was made with about three laps to go, making it six up front. And they would ride together for the final three laps.

The attacks then began around halfway around the final loop. Prendergast broke clear on his own and Moore attacked after him.

Lavery was attentive to the threat and had the legs to go next. He and Moore joined forces and riding together they would catch the lone leader at the death.

They closed down Prendergast just before the finish and eventual winner Moore rounded the final corner third wheel.

He then went for broke and proved strongest in the dash to the line; taking victory from Lavery and Prendergast, in that order.

Reilly and Delaney were just behind, and they took 4th and 5th places after riding strongly.

Moore told stickybottle he had tweaked his training of late and felt his form was getting better.

The Caldwell Cycles man already has a string of podium finishes under his belt this year; six in total including his two wins.

He was one of the key protagonists in the Tour of the North over Easter. And he also gained selection on the U23 Irish team for the recent ZLM Tour in Holland.

“I was really pleased to win today,” he said of his Waller Cup victory.

“And it was a great weekend for the team, winning the Wallace Caldwell yesterday also,” he added of Gary Donaldson’s win.

“My form’s good. I’ve been getting a bit of help with a few small things recently; training wise. I’ll do the Tour of Ulster next and then it’s on to the Rás.”
