Dan Martin set for busy week in Italy before Lombardy showdown

Dan Martin Il Lombardia

Dan Martin wins the Tour of Lombardy four years ago. He has an impressive record in the race but his form is a little more uncertain at present.

Dan Martin and team prepares for Il Lombardia

UAE Team Emirates has confirmed its line-ups for the three late-season Italian races building up to Il Lombardia next Saturday.

Dan Martin rides two of the three build-up races. And while the team for Il Lombardia itself has not been named, the Irish rider would normally be expected to ride.

He has a very strong record in the race, winning in 2014, taking 2nd in 2011 and claiming 4th in 2013.

However, before the 2018 edition is tackled there is other business to be done. The races in the days ahead include Tre Valli Varesine, Milano-Torino and Gran Piemonte.

Tre Valli Varesine on Tuesday is 193km and undulating. Milano-Torino on Wednesday is 200km and for climbers.

Dan Martin and Fabio Aru will ride both. They will forego Gran Piemonte on Thursday, which is more for sprinters.

However, while UAE Team Emirates has included its two general classification heavy hitters in the line-ups for the first two races, it is Rui Costa who leads the team.

Aru has shown poor form all season. Dan Martin has had a much better year. He took a stage win apiece in the Dauphiné and Tour de France and was 8th overall in the latter.

But Martin’s wife gave birth to twins recently. And that took him away from racing, including leaving the Vuelta early.

And because of his interrupted programme, it remains unclear what he will be capable of in the coming week.

UAE Team Emirates sports director Mario Scirea said the team is looking for results as it builds towards Il Lombardia.

“We’re expecting three interesting races in which we can line up some important riders,” he said.

“Rui Costa will find routes suited to his skills in the Tre Valli Varesine and in the Milano-Torino.

“(These are) races in which we will have several options, since Aru and Martin will be there as well.

“In the Gran Piemonte, Tivani could have a good chance if things should end in a sprinting arrival.

“We will try to make the most of the three races as we prepare our approach to the Il Lombardia.”
