The Garda is investigating a collision earlier today in which a cyclist lost her life when hit by a tractor.

According to the gardai, the incident occurred at approximately 1pm. The female cyclist died at the scene in Co Cork.

This latest cyclist death brings to 11 the number of cyclists killed on the roads in the Republic this year.

That’s one more than the number of cyclists killed in all of last year.

And today’s fatality was the second time this year a cyclist has died in an incident involving a tractor.

The case earlier in the year took place in May near Killarney, Co Kerry.

The Garda published a statement this afternoon with details of today’s death.

“Gardaí are investigating a fatal road traffic collision involving a tractor and a female cyclist on the N28 Cork-Ringaskiddy Rd,” the Garda said.

“A cyclist in her 60s suffered serious injuries when she was involved in a collision with a tractor. The driver of the tractor was uninjured.

“The body of the woman has been removed to Cork University Hospital where a post mortem examination will take place.

“Traffic diversions are in place and forensic collision investigators are at the scene.”

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact Angelsea St Garda Station on 021 4522000.

Witness can also contact the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666-111 or any Garda Station.
