The latest fatality brings to 12 the number of cyclists killed on the roads in what has been a black year for cycling deaths. Five cyclists were killed last year.

The 72-year-old man was cycling on the main Borrisokane to Portumna road, in the townland of Lahinch, when the car hit him at around 9.30am.

The emergency services were alerted immediately and rushed to the scene. However, the victim was very badly injured and was pronounced dead at the scene.

His remains were taken to the University Hospital Limerick, where they were due to undergo a full post mortem examination later today.

The road where the collision occurred has been sealed off and is being examined by Garda crash scene investigators.
