Chris Froome crashes in Dauphiné TT warm-up: Team Ineos had confirmed he’s out of the race and had been taken to hospital.

Chris Froome is out of Critérium du Dauphiné after a crash while warming up for today’s stage 4 TT.

Team Ineos has confirmed the crash, adding Froome would not start the TT.

It appears now a long lay-off is in store for him and that he will not be able to ride the Tour de France.

At the time of writing he had been taken to hospital so his injuries could be assessed.

Early reports suggest he had hit a concrete barrier and broken his femur, in which case he would also be out of the Tour de France.

He has crashed before during a TT warm-up, coming down hard at the Giro last year as this video revealed.

Froome has had a very quiet 2019 and was hoping to be one of the key riders in the Critérium du Dauphiné and to perhaps win the race.

It had become more crucial than ever as a Tour preparation race because he has competed so little this season.

Froome had ridden well on the opening stages of the Dauphiné, making the crucial favourites’ group on stage 2 of the race.

He was due to go into today’s TT in Roanne in 8th place overall, among a group of big favourites all on the same time.

After yesterday’s stage that group of GC men was 24 seconds down on yellow jersey and stage 2 winner Dylan Teuns (Bahrain-Merida).

More to come.
