Video: Bridge washed away by floods on Yorkshire Worlds course

Grinton Bridge, on a key climb set to be used during the World Championships in Yorkshire, has been washed away raising doubts about whether the intended route for racing can still be used in just under two months time

With less than two months to the World Road Championships
in Yorkshire there are now real doubts about the intended course for the
events.

A bridge along the route has seen a large section washed
away by recent heavy floods, as the video below captures.

The time frame for carrying out repairs is very tight and
because the bridge is so old rebuilding it will prove a complex and time
consuming task.

On Tuesday 100m of rain fell, causing high flooding with
rapidly moving water carrying debris pounding Grinton Moore bridge.

The section of the bridge that cross the river was
complete washed away. It forms the route to the Grinton Moor climb which is to
be climbed about 120km into the 285km men’s road race.

Andy Hindley, the
chief executive of Yorkshire Worlds 2019 said the champion organisers were
working with local service providers in relation to the collapsed bridge.

“At the
current time, our thoughts are with those affected by the flooding,” he said in
a brief statement.

“We will address any damage to race routes with North
Yorkshire County Council in due course.”
