Wiggins urges Team Sky to sign Van der Poel like cycling’s Man City

Bradley Wiggins said Team Sky could and should sign Matthieu van der Poel.

Bradley Wiggins has called on Team Sky to sign Matthieu van der Poel but bemoaned the squad buying up talent in cycling like Manchester City in soccer.

Van der Poel staged an incredible final section of Amstel Gold last weekend; towing a chase group up to the breakaway and then passing them to win.

He has won Dwars door Vlaanderen, Brabantse Pijl and GP Denain and was also 4th in both the Tour of Flanders and Gent Wevelgem.

All of his results have come in his first proper spring on the road and though he has just turned 24-years-old.

“He’s just impressed us every week,” Bradley Wiggins has said, on his Eurosport show, of the new Dutch superstar.

“He is the hottest property in cycling at the moment, other than Alaphilippe. He’s (got) bigger potential.

“It’s weird to call him a potential because he’s already winning these big races. His potential is massive.

“It’s scary to think what he might actually achieve by the time he’s (Philippe) Gilbert’s age.”

He added if Team Sky could sign van der Poel or Alaphilippe they should choose the Dutchman.

“I would pick Matthieu van der Poel. That’s no slouch on Alaphilippe, he’s phenomenal as well,” he said.

“But I think (van der Poel) could win a Grand Tour one day.

“It’s a little bit sad to think that they both may end up at Sky-Ineos. It’s a bit like Manchester City and football. It’s nice having this spread of riders.

“It was great seeing him win from another team – against Kwiatkowski – imagine if they were all in the same team.”

Wiggins, now retired, won the Tour de France in 2012 with Team Sky when he was team mates with Chris Froome and Geraint Thomas.
