Jimmy Magee on Sean Kelly in 1985 Nissan TT

The death of sports commentator Jimmy Magee may have taken place but his best moments will live on forever.

And one of those was, without question, his commentary on the now iconic TT in the 1985 Nissan Classic.

It took the riders from Sean Kelly Square in Carrick-on-Suir to Clonmel; some 13 miles in all.

Sean Kelly would win the stage and also take the leader’s jersey, with the dominant ride featured in the clip below.

The rider he is catching near the finish is Adri Van de Poel (Kwantum). Kelly was catching him for a minute, though the Dutchman was still 3rd on the stage.

Stephen Roche was 2nd in the TT, losing 49 seconds to Kelly. But Roche would win the afternoon stage into Cork, where Kelly was runner-up.

One great line from Magee in the commentary below was: “It’s a long way to Tipperary but it’s faster with Sean Kelly in the saddle.”

This is one of the most iconic moments in Irish sports. It’s easy to forget now that racing visits by Kelly and Roche brought real glamour to what was a grey enough Ireland in the 1980s.
